Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about placenta encapsulation with Placenta Essex UK. If your question isn’t answered here, please get in touch.

Placenta encapsulation has a long history in traditional postpartum practices across different cultures. Today, many mothers who choose to consume their placenta report benefits such as feeling more energised, supported emotionally during the postnatal period, noticing an increase in milk supply, and experiencing a smoother recovery after birth.

The placenta naturally contains iron, amino acids, essential fats and hormones produced during pregnancy and birth. While research into placenta consumption is still developing and experiences vary from person to person, many clients choose encapsulation as part of their postpartum support and recovery journey.

Yes, for the vast majority of births. Encapsulation is safe if you had a water birth, epidural, induction, took antidepressants during pregnancy, have an STD such as gonorrhoea or chlamydia, are GBS positive, were diagnosed with preeclampsia, or opted for delayed cord clamping or cord blood banking. Encapsulation may not be suitable if you had a fever or infection during labour (subject to testing) or if you were a heavy smoker or used illegal drugs during pregnancy. Always consult your healthcare provider if you have concerns.

We offer three types:

  • Simple Capsules (reported to give more energy — our most popular choice)
  • Steamed Capsules (reported to have a more calming effect, steamed with lemon, chilli and ginger)
  • 50/50 Capsules (a combination of both for the best of both methods).

We collect your placenta within 12 hours of birth and begin processing in our dedicated facility within 24 hours. Most clients receive their finished capsules within 48–72 hours of giving birth.

We accept bookings from 12 weeks pregnant. We’ll send your cool pack with full instructions at around 36 weeks. If you are past 36 weeks, please contact us before ordering so we can confirm availability.

We cover all of mainland UK — both hospital and home births. Delivery prices vary by area. Select your delivery zone at checkout to see the cost for your location.

While we cannot make medical claims, the placenta contains CRH (your body’s natural stress reducer) and vitamin B6, both of which are linked to reduced symptoms of postnatal depression. In an IPEN report of 1,100 women who consumed placenta capsules, only 2 reported low feelings. Many of our clients report feeling more balanced, positive and emotionally supported during their postpartum recovery.

A tincture is a liquid version of your placenta capsules. It takes 6–8 weeks to prepare and creates a potent remedy that lasts indefinitely. It can be kept and used through menopause, or prepared at a later date using 10 of your capsules. The tincture is added to water or taken daily when you need it.

Place your placenta in the cool pack we provide, which comes with full instructions. Keep it cool and let us know as soon as your baby is born. We’ll arrange collection promptly.

Yes. We are fully insured by BGI.uk with professional indemnity and public liability cover, and we are IPEN trained in placenta remedies, infection control and food hygiene. Your placenta is prepared in our dedicated facility in Hockley, Essex — only one placenta enters the facility at a time.

Yes, absolutely. A Caesarean section does not affect the suitability of your placenta for encapsulation. We work with mothers who have had all types of births.

The number of capsules varies depending on the size of your placenta. On average, clients receive between 100 and 200+ capsules. The most we’ve produced from one placenta is 244 capsules!
